Richard I (Coeur de Lion - the Lionheart)

Note: Richard never placed his name on his English coins, this was only seen on his French coins that can be seen below, namely the Anglo-Gallic selection.

Richard I, Silver Voided Short Cross Penny, Ulard, Canterbury, 1189-1199

Obverse: Crowned facing bust with 5 pearls, pellets as whiskers, parallel crescents as hair, sceptre, irregular lettering, hENRICVS R/EX

 

 

Reverse:  Small voided cross with quatrefoils in each angle, beaded circle around, +VLARD.ON.CANT

0.94g, 18mm

Grade: Fine, clipped flan, but reasonable portrait for type

Ref: S1348 probably cl.4b

Obverse: Crowned facing bust with 7 pearls, pellets as whiskers, parallel crescents as hair, sceptre, neat lettering, hENRICVS R/EX

Reverse:  Small voided cross with quatrefoils in each angle, beaded circle around, +STIVENE.ON.LVN

1.33g, 18mm

Grade: VF, neat portrait for type, full flan but slightly off centre

Ref: S1348 probably cl.4a or c

Obverse: Legend around a cross within inner circle, O in third quarter, +RICARDVS REX

Reverse:  Inscription in three lines, PIC TAVIE NSIS

Prov: Ex The Coinery, comes with Spink envelope and old ticket; plus one other newer envelope.
