Richard I (Coeur de Lion - the Lionheart)

Note: Richard never placed his name on his English coins, this was only seen on his French coins that can be seen below, namely the Anglo-Gallic selection.

*NEW* Richard I, Silver Voided Short Cross Penny, Ricard, London, Cl 4a, 1190-1194

Obverse: Crowned facing bust with 7 pearls, multiple hair curls beard not visible, sceptre, hENRICVS R/EX

 

Reverse: Small voided cross with quatrefoils in each angle, beaded circle around, +RICARD.ON.LVND (ND ligate) 

Size: 1.23g, 18mm

Grade: VF, weak strike to bottom, visible bold, toned

Ref: S 1347, cl 4a, SCBI Mass 930ff

Prov: Ex Spink, previously Baldwins with ticket showing purchased in 1960.

Obverse: Crowned facing bust with 5 pearls, 3/2 curls, chin and side whiskers made up of small curls, sceptre, hENRICVS R/EX

Reverse: Small voided cross with quatrefoils in each angle, beaded circle around, +RICARD.ON.LVN

Size: 1.02g, 18mm

Grade: VF, bold strike for type

Ref: S 1347, cl 3ab2

Prov: Ex Spink, previously Baldwins with ticket showing purchased in 1954. Spink states class IIIab2, VF and scarce, the die not present in the Mass collection.

Obverse: Crowned facing bust with 5 pearls, pellets as whiskers, parallel crescents as hair, sceptre, irregular lettering, hENRICVS R/EX

 

 

Reverse: Small voided cross with quatrefoils in each angle, beaded circle around, +VLARD.ON.CANT

Size: 0.94g, 18mm

Grade: Fine, clipped flan, but reasonable portrait for type

Ref: S 1348 probably cl.4b

Reverse:  Small voided cross with quatrefoils in each angle, beaded circle around, +STIVENE.ON.LVN

Size: 1.33g, 18mm

Grade: VF, neat portrait for type, full flan but slightly off centre

Ref: S 1348 probably cl.4a or c

Reverse: Inscription in three lines, PIC TAVIE NSIS
